Nature Study & Science

DIY

We have taken a mostly DIY approach to nature study and science the last few years (my kiddos are 6.5, 4.5, and 1.5). So much of science for littles is exploring the world around them, making observations, and asking questions.

For our family, this has looked like thematic morning time/basket based (Signs of Autumn, Pumpkins, Animals in Winter, Pollinators, Flowers, Whales, Rock Pools, etc.).

We have also incorporated nature journaling into our weekly rhythm. Most weeks, we create an entry in our nature journals based on something we experienced in nature.

We have also utilized unit studies on topics like Snow, Inventions, Whales, Penguins, Bees, Birds, etc. to dive deep into a particular topic. As my kiddos get older, we will add in more intentional focuses.

Exploring Nature with Children

We have used Exploring Nature with Children as a resource, more than a curriculum. ENWC offers weekly themes with resources (books, poems) and activities based on seasonal observations.

Blossom & Root

Blossom and Root offers a wide range of nature-based curricula. We will use some of their science and nature curricula (Wonders of the Plant and Fundi Kingdoms) this upcoming school year alongside Oak Meadow 1. I share a little bit about supplementing OM with B&R here.
