DIY

I have taken a mostly DIY approach to art education for our kiddos. I try to include a variety of opportunities to explore different materials and focus on process over product. I will often incorporate art history and art lessons from our go-to resources for our weekly/monthly themes. As my kiddos get older, we will likely do a more intentional dive into art history/appreciation and pull from art curricula and resources like Art History Kids and Core Knowledge picture studies.

You can check out some of our favorite art books here.

Resources

You Are An Artist Chalk Pastels: My kiddos love Nana’s chalk pastel lessons. These lessons have been a great way to integrate art into our unit studies/topics. If you are new to You are An Artist, you can check out her free videos on YouTube.

Deep Space Sparkle: I’ve leaned on Patty at Deep Space Sparkle since I was a classroom teacher. Her lessons are fun and colorful and something my kids look forward to working on.

Art History Kids: We recently joined The Studio membership at Art History Kids to use their database of past lessons when integrating art into our unit studies.

CK Art: Core Knowledge Art is in the works, but for now they have great art cards that can be used for picture studies.

Waldorfish: Waldorfish offers Waldorf-inspired homeschool art courses for students and adults.

Music

DIY

Despite playing a variety of instruments growing up (piano, violin, guitar), we are not a very musical family. We love listening to music, making music with kid-friendly instruments, and learning about famous musicians.

Topics We Have Explored:

  • American Folk Songs

  • Classical Music

  • Jazz/Blues

You can check out some of our favorite music books here.

Resources

  • See my post on music appreciation here.

  • SQUILT: SQUILT offers a variety of music appreciation resources from individual guides to a monthly membership listening calendar. So far, we have only used some guides. In the future, we will likely incorporate the monthly listening calendars into our rhythm.
