Spelling Connections Review

Spelling Connections is a systematic and explicit spelling program for 1st- 6th grade (although I recommend doing a spelling assessment to see what spelling level would align with your child’s spelling needs). This program was designed by J. Richard Gentry, author of Brain Words. Please note, while an instructor guide is available, I do not think it is worth the price tag. IF you choose to use Spelling Connections as your primary spelling program, I recommend adding in phoneme-grapheme mapping and establishing a weekly spelling routine.

Spelling Connections may be a great fit if:

  • You want a budget-friendly, workbook-based program.

  • You are looking for a workbook supplement for another program.

  • You have a child who has strong spelling skills, but you want to cover your bases.

Spelling Connections may not be the right choice if:

  • You have a struggling speller and need additional support (*you could do this along with my Spelling Guide for guidance).

  • Your child is just beginning reading instruction.

  • Your child does not know the consonant and short vowel sounds.

Do you have a struggling speller?

I also have a Spelling Instruction Guide. It is a 20-page guide for selecting, implementing, and making the most of a spelling program.

While some excellent, evidence-based spelling programs are available, many children need more than what is outlined in a single program.

This guide walks you through spelling curriculum options, pacing, and instructional activities and addresses the questions I hear most from clients about spelling. It also includes a weekly spelling checklist to use during your planning.
