Spellography

If you have an older student (4th grade and up) who reads well but struggles with spelling, this might be the program for you. Spellography, by Dr. Moats and Dr. Rosow, has recently been reprinted, and it is unlike any spelling program you have ever seen.

Spellography is centered around the idea that struggling spellers need to understand why we spell words the way we do — looking at words from multiple angles. This program takes the following language components:

  • Phonology: The sounds we hear in words

  • Orthography: How we represent the sounds we hear with letters

  • Morphology: The study of meaningful parts of words (think suffixes, affixes, roots)

  • Syntax: The study of word arrangement in sentence formation

Please note that this program is not for most students. It is designed specifically for older students (4th grade and up) who have already been exposed to phonics rules and are reading fluently. This program is not for younger students who struggle with spelling or are still struggling with reading fluency.

You can check out a detailed look inside Spellography in my YouTube video.

If you have a student struggling with spelling, regardless of age, check out my spelling guide. It will help you make the most of your spelling curriculum, provide insight on how to teach spelling, address frequently asked questions, and provide strategies to help make spelling stick.
