recipe for reading: a review
Recipe for Reading is a structured literacy program based on Orton-Gillingham methods. It has been around for over 50 years and markets itself as an intervention program. However, that just means it is following best practices, which we know from research are good for all learners. Recipe for Reading is a budget-friendly, no-frills , multi-sensory foundational reading program. Unlike many other programs, you only need to purchase one instructor manual as the manual covers ALL foundational reading skills (roughly grades K-2). Recipe for Reading covers foundational phonics, word study, and a little bit of handwriting. You would need to add in a writing program for 2nd grade. You can use the program with just the manual. However, I recommend adding in the workbooks and decodable readers if they fall within your budget (eBay tends to have them).
