UFLI foundations: a review
UFLI Foundations is a new foundational reading skills curriculum designed by the University of Florida Literacy Institute, a leader in research-based reading instruction. It is a budget-friendly, no-frills, program rooted in the science of reading. The program includes basic phonemic awareness, foundational phonics, and basic word study. It does not include writing, so you would want to add that in around 1st-2nd grade. If utilizing the digital resources, UFLI Foundations is open-and-go, otherwise you would need to prepare fluency sheets and print decodable passages. The manual covers all of your foundational skills for grades K-2, so you would not need to purchase an additional manual for each grade level. This program offers a lot of support for instructors through video tutorials and an upcoming video library. For more on UFLI Foundations, check out my YouTube review here.
UFLI Foundations may be a great fit if:
You are beginning reading instruction between 5.5-7 years old
You want an open-and-go program
You prefer digital resources
Your child struggled with a different program
Your child reads fluently, but has gaps in their foundational skills
You want a budget-friendly curriculum
You find video tutorials helpful
UFLI Foundations may not be the right choice if:
You are beginning reading instruction early (under 5.5 years old)
You prefer a program that includes workbooks and corresponding decodable readers
Your child would benefit from games and ample practice
Program Cost and Components:
Manual: $70 + $20 shipping (which is ridiculous, IMO)
