logic of english foundations: a review

Logic of English Foundations

Logic of English (LoE) Foundations is a strong foundational reading program used both in the homeschool community and in some classroom settings. LoE’s foundational reading program, Foundations, consists of 4 levels (A-D). Once completing the Foundations program, you can continue literacy skill development in LoE’s developing literacy program, Essentials. Foundations covers phonological awareness, phonics, handwriting, and word study. They also have elements of writing and grammar woven in, but you would also likely need a separate writing program for 2nd grade and up. LoE is mostly open-and-go, there is some prep work like punching out letter tiles and preparing game pieces for a lesson. LoE includes various games (movement-based to board games) and has a fantastic game book that you can pair with any reading program (not just LoE). Foundations also has an optional online supplement with videos, activities and more. LoE is different from most other reading programs in that they teach all the sounds a letter makes from the beginning, instead of slowly introducing additional sounds. I go into more detail on this in my Foundational Reading Skills Curriculum Comparison video on YouTube, where I do an in-depth look inside LoE Foundations, All About Reading, and Pinwheels.

Logic of English Foundations may be a great fit if:

  • Your child is a very logical thinker — give them the real/reason for something, and they will get to work applying it

  • You are beginning reading instruction at 5.5-6.5 years old

  • You want an open-and-go program

  • Your child learns well through games

  • Your child is already reading, but you suspect they have gaps in foundational skills

  • You have an older child who is a struggling reader or dyslexic

  • You would benefit from online video support

Logic of English Foundations may not be the right choice if:

  • You are beginning reading instruction early (under 5.5 years old)

  • Your child would be overwhelmed learning all the sounds a letter makes from the beginning and then selecting which sound for a word based-on phonics rules

  • Your child needs a slower pace the LoE provides

Program Cost and Components:

  • Foundations A Complete Set: $179 - This includes the teacher guide, student workbook, handwriting components, letter tiles and additional resources.

  • Foundations B Set: $95 if coming up from level A, $207 if you are new to LoE.

  • Foundations C Set: $117

  • Foundations D Set: $97
