history resources for the early years

My oldest, 6.5yo C1, has recently become fascinated by history, thanks to the Magic Tree House series. I was quickly getting bombarded by facts, historical analysis (6-year-old style), and thoughts about how hard things used to be. Immediately my brain starts shouting, "TEACHABLE MOMENT! SEIZE THIS OPPORTUNITY!" and so we did.

Today I'm going to share some of the resources we have been using over the past few months and our plans for history lessons moving forward.

This year the block of our learning has revolved around unit studies. We read books, watch related video clips, create play scenes, and draw/paint for our main lesson books.

Next year we will begin a 4-year history cycle (ancient, middle, early modern, & modern), starting with Ancient History.

History Curriculum

We will use History Quest and Curiosity Chronicles for our spine and supplement with Passport to Adventures by Jessica Waldock, reference books, specific topic books, and historical fiction.

History Quest by Pandia Press

History Quest is a new (secular) curriculum by Pandia Press. They currently have Ancient and Middle History out and will be releasing updated versions for early modern and modern history soon. We have started listening to the ancient history audiobook companion and it’s fantastic!

Curiosity Chronicles

We haven’t started using curiosity chronicles yet, but I’m looking forward to pulling it into the loop. We will start their audiobook companion when we finish the History Quest ancient history volume.
